He studied at the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti in Turin, Italy. He worked for Giovanni Battista Biscarro (1790-151) and Luigi Vacca (1778-1854) whose Daughter he married. He was the First Italian Artist to specialize in lithography and wood engraving. Famous illustrator of i Promessi Sposi, stories della colonia infame by Alessandro Manzoni, published together in Milano in 1840. He also illustrated selected poetry of Carlo Porta and Tommaso Grossi written in Milanese dialect. Poesie scelte in dialetto (Milano 1842). In these illustration he reveal a taste for the humble and picturesque. He was a versatile artist and, after collaborating with Vacca in the 1830 received Royal commission for fresco with Carlo Bellosio (1801-49) He decorated the ballroom of the Palazzo Reale in Turin and the Sala delle Verne in the Castello di Racconigi (both 1840-41). He also decorated the Palazzo Carignano in Turin (1845) In 1854 Gonin succeded Vacca as stage designer at the Teatro Regio in Turin. His most famous piece was the large curtain depicting The Thriumph of Venus, of which the sketch still exist (1854 Turin Gal.LIv.A Moto) He was a partner of historical genre and religious subject as well as landscape and portraits. Some of his work are held in Galleries di Palazzo Bianco in Genova and in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte in Modena.
