Ref :Dizionario degli incisori by Giorgio Milesi, Saggio di bibiolgrafia ragionata a cura di Paolo Bellini.
Etching of an ancient garden with people, reversed copy by Franz Rechberger of a signed etching by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione fec. (detto Grechetto) Genova 1609- Mantova 1665.
Castiglione was a versatile artist. He was the first Italian to discover Rembrandt (1630) which remained an inspiration all his life. Documented in Rome 1632-34 Castiglione came under the influence of Poussin. In 1630 he invented the monotype technique - a single print made from an unincised copper plate painted in oil or printer's ink. From 1634 he spent some times in Naple, in turn influencing indigenous painters. Returned to Genova in 1645, completed monumental Baroque works. In 1648 he was appointed court painter in Mantua. There are drawings, etchings and monotype in the Royal Collection (Windsor)and paintings in various Galleries, including Birmingham.
