"La Fuga in Egitto" Etching signed with description by Gio.Benedetto Castiglione, called Grechetto -Genovese inc.fe.-Genova 1609 Mantova 1663/5 16th Century Italian Artist. He was a versatile artist, born and trained in Genova, equally at home on an intimate scale and in monumental work, in rustic genre and in the grand manner. He completed his training with Sinibaldo Scorza (1589-1631) He was the first Italian to discover the etchings of Rembrandt. In 1632-34 He was in Rome , he was influenced by Poussin "Baroque decoration" From 1634 he spent some times in Naple, in turn influencing indigenous painters.In 1630 invented the monotype tecnique, and began to excute fluid brush drawings in oil on paper. Returned to Genova in 1645 and completed monumental Baroque work. In 1648 he was appointed court painter in Mantua and worked continuosly until his death. There are drawings, etchings, and monotypes in the Royal Collection (Windsor) Paintings in various galleries, including Birmingham.
