Erte' was born Romain de Tirtoff on November 23. 1892 at the Imperial Naval School in St. Petersburg. His father, Piotr Ivanovitch de Tirtoff, an Admiral of the Imperial Fleet, Aristocratic family, patron of the arts, often took his Son to the theater, opera, ballet.
The Mother often took him to shopping expedition and he was fascinated by couturier's craft. He was an excellent student and graduated with honor from Kronstadt College in St. Petersburg in 1911. He was rewarder a passport and a ticket to Paris. In February 1912 he arrived in Paris and enrolled in Jean-Paul Lauren's painting classes at the Academie Julian. In 1913 he had a contract with the couturier Paul Poiret
designing coat, hat, costumes and set designs. At the beginning of WWI Poiret closed House and Erte was selling his design to Vogue, Bazaar, and in 1915 costumes for Revue de Saint-Cyr. Ziegfeld Follies, Folies Bergere. In 1920 Erte' contracted to design costumes for William Randolph Hearst's motion picture company. MGM. Between 1930-1950 was involved in theatrical designing particularly opera. At the age of seventy-five Erte was finally recognized as a key figure in the development of the Art Deco. He had many exhibith. The Metropolitan Museum of Art purchased 179 of his work. In 1968 he printed his first set of lithographs.In 1980 Robert Parker from New york went to Paris to convince Erte to use his lithographs drawing for a collection of sculptures.His Nineten first scuptures's collection started. In 1980 they were introduced at the Los Angeles Expo. Erte lived in Boulogne-sur-Seine, Paris with cats, fish, aviary of turtledoves. He sayd "My work has been my life" Erte' died in Paris in 1991
